What is a junior bed? Which bedding should I choose for it?

In a bedroom, the junior bed is ideal to equip the room of your child or teenager who is no longer a baby. This type of bed is suitable for a child, a teenager or even an adult. You can therefore use the junior bed for a child's room or a guest room.

Measuring 90 x 200 cm, the junior bed is designed to accommodate one person and is 10 cm longer than normal beds, i.e. 190 cm long. It guarantees sufficient and optimal space for your child's comfort in his room.

You can also choose, from the earliest age and first weeks of your child, the evolving baby bed which will accompany your child during the various stages of its growth. When converted, the evolving cot will reach dimensions of 90 x 200 cm and become a junior bed.

To accompany your child's junior bed, you need the right mattress, the right base and the right duvet. How to choose?

- The mattress

For the mattress of your child's bed, and for total safety, choose the same size as your junior bed. You then have the choice of the composition of your mattress. We advise you to choose and select a quality mattress made of foam or latex for your child's comfort. These materials will support your child properly on the mattress, and provide optimal comfort for your child's sleep.

- The bed base

There are different types of bed bases that can be used with your child. However, among the various possibilities available to you, the child bed is more suited to a slatted base. The advantage of this type of base is that it allows your mattress to breathe. As a support that can accompany your child for years, a slatted base with these characteristics is recommended. You can also choose a slatted base if you want a firmer base for your child to sleep on. However, this type of base is recommended for younger children. Once they are older, teenagers do not necessarily need a firm and robust bed, a greater flexibility is required and appreciated.

- The duvet

When it comes to the duvet to put on top of your junior bed, we advise you to choose a duvet that is larger than the dimensions of your bed. A duvet measuring 220 x 240 cm is ideal for covering the whole body of your child or guest.

What are the different types of junior bed and how do I choose?

You can find different styles and types of junior bed.

The first possibility is the bench bed. The bench bed is similar to the convertible bed, it will sometimes look like a very decorative bench, sometimes like a bed for your child or your guest. It is very practical and visually ideal for your teenager's bedroom. Rêves et Merveilles has selected for you the banquette beds of the brand Oliver Furniture which are functional, design and original. A bed with a Scandinavian design that combines quality, safety and aestheticism of its visual. This type of bed can be completed with a barrier that will offer additional safety, if you wish to use this junior bed for a little one and avoid any risk of falling.

The hut bed is also made from a 90 x 200 cm junior bed. It is also suitable for your children or teenagers, as it is presented in a variety of designs, each one more original than the last. The junior cabin bed can have the appearance of a big house, a high house, a teepee or sometimes a simpler and more refined design.

The mezzanine bed also serves as a 90 x 200 cm junior bed. High up, it represents a different design and offers another bed option for our favourite teenagers. In a children's room, the loft bed should be used from a certain age to avoid the risk of falling.

The box bed can be composed of an extra bed or drawers. The drawer bed is ideal for maximizing space and receiving a friend to sleep. Storage and bed in the same piece of furniture to simplify your life and optimise the space in your bedroom.

For your child, one of our favourite design and product is the junior bed imagined by the brand OEUF NYC with its magnificent River bed. Another nice novelty is the children's beds from THEO with the vintage charm of rattan which can be completed with matching storage furniture.

How do you move your child from a toddler bed to a junior bed?

It is important to explain the transition to a bigger bed to your child. Be reassuring in your speech and tell him the whys and wherefores of this change. Accompany him in this change to a bigger bed until he is ready to make the transition. Don't impose a change of bed on him overnight without first discussing it and exchanging views on the subject.

Continue to assume your choice even if your child is reluctant or even refuses the change. The acquisition of the junior bed will take time, but stay the course and do not change your mind on the subject. Be firm in what you say while discussing the issue, his fears and reluctance. To help him in this transition, leave elements in the new bed that remind him of his old habits. Use the same plaids, sheets and cuddly toys so that he feels good, accompanied and understood in this new stage.

This is why the evolving cot is the perfect alternative.

If you have had problems with your first child's transition from one bed to another, don't hesitate to opt for an evolving baby bed from the start. It will accompany your child from birth and can be adjusted to suit the different ages of your child, eventually becoming a 90 x 200 cm junior bed. This will not disrupt your child's sleep and will allow him to remain in the same sleeping environment, but above all to better understand these different stages.

As you can see, the 90 x 200 cm junior bed is ideal for your child's bedroom when he or she becomes a teenager or for a guest room for your guests.

The junior bed can be created in various ways, through different styles and universes, whether it is through a house, a teepee, a mezzanine bed, a bench bed, a chest bed, etc. A junior bed design can be achieved through these types of bed or simply with a classic junior bed. All these possibilities are available to you and your child for his or her bedroom.

Don't forget to accompany your child during this change, which represents a big step in the life of a little boy or girl towards adolescence or the world of the older ones. Explain, discuss and accompany your child in this new beginning.
